Bishnoi gang threatens Sidhu Moosewala’s father, Punjab leaders after ‘Lawrence of Punjab’ halt

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has issued serious threats to Balkaur Singh and several political leaders and officials in Punjab following the halt on the release of the docuseries Lawrence of Punjab. The group warned that the documentary “will be released at any cost” and issued chilling messages asking those named to “prepare their shrouds,” while also threatening violence through bullets and bombs instead of monetary demands.

Those named in the threats include Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, senior leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, leader Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, and Advocate General Maninderjit Singh Bedi. Reports indicate that threat messages were sent through foreign WhatsApp numbers, prompting Punjab Police to launch an investigation into the matter.

The controversy erupted after the Centre advised an OTT platform not to release the docuseries, which was scheduled to stream on April 27. During a hearing, the court was informed that the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued an advisory to halt the release, and the matter has been deferred for further proceedings. The series reportedly explores the life and rise of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, portraying his trajectory through student politics, media, and cultural narratives.

Opposition to the series had been building even before the halt, with Punjab leaders and authorities warning that such content could glorify organised crime and negatively influence youth. Punjab Police had also written to the Centre seeking intervention, citing concerns over law and order. Balkaur Singh, father of slain singer Sidhu Moosewala, had strongly objected to the show, calling it harmful and questioning the portrayal of individuals linked to his son’s murder.

The threats have significantly escalated tensions surrounding the controversy, turning it into a major law and order concern. With investigations underway, authorities are examining the origin of the messages and assessing security for those named, as the situation continues to develop amid heightened scrutiny over the halted docuseries.
